Thank you for dedicating mile #171 in honor of our 8 year old son, Michael Xavier Munsell. Michael is our third child out of our awesome crew of six! On March 26th, 2017, Michael was diagnosed with aggressive T cell Leukemia. Treatment took awhile to begin as an 11 cm mass was wrapped around his heart and compressing his airway so that breathing was very labored and the pain from the tumor burden was excruciating. As his mother, after working in adult oncology my entire career, the words, “your son has leukemia” brought me to my knees screaming and begging the doctors and God to say their had been some horrible mistake. Unfortunately, there was no mistake. Our 8 year old son would begin his valiant fight against this life threatening disease immediately. Michael is a fighter who places his trust in God and never complains. When the pain and nausea are severe, he sheds tears as he apologizes for his cancer and the pain it has caused us and his siblings. He always puts others first although he suffers so much more physically than any of us. Pediatric cancer tries to kill the entire family. Our other 5 children are raised by nannies, dad (Joe) works long hours to financially support our family and provide health insurance, and mom lives in the hospital or oncology clinic (2+ hours from home) almost daily. Life was changed for our close knit family instantly. Michael still has close to 3 years to fight this beast. Please pray for Michael, his 5 siblings he loves more than life itself, our faith and perseverance, and that ultimately Michael wins his battle. To quote Michael…..he says, “please never worry about me. Things could be worse. Some kids with cancer won’t survive. If I could trade places with one of them so that they might live, I would do it in a second. Please don’t cry for me, I promise to never ever give up. I will win this fight!”
We love you Michael Xavier!
